Zaha Hadid a Nicosia
A modern vision for Nicosia By
Maria Socratous INTERVENING where history reigns is sacrilege. Intervening to restore, enhance and bring a capital city and its people into the 21st century is commendable. Today at the Famagusta Gate is your last chance to glimpse at what the historical centre of Nicosia might look like once the construction is over. There hanging on the walls are the proposed panels submitted by the participants of the Architectural competition for redesigning and landscaping Eleftheria Square and the surrounding area – a project that is part of the revitalisation programme of the area adjacent to the Green Line in the capital.
The first prize was given to Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid, and her associates Christos Passas and Saffet Bekiroglu. The first phase of the ambitious project will cost £3.8 million, with the government funding 80 per cent of the amount and the Municipality the rest. The area in question covers Kaningos Bridge (by the Ochi kiosk) and moves west towards Solomos Square (the bus terminal).
