Prima del www e, comunque, fino a tempi recenti, solo pochi fortunati (al di fuori dei singoli ambiti aziendali o istituzionali) riuscivano a procurarsene delle copie a stampa, per poterli studiare e confrontare, sia nel merito che nel metodo.
Oggi, secondo un indirizzo sempre più diffuso (non solo presso le aziende ma anche presso istituzioni, quali quelle universitarie, linkate a parte), i manuali vengono invece pubblicati online (molto spesso si possono anche scaricare .pdf), semplificandone radicalmente la possibilità di implementazione e, al contempo, di indagine da parte degli interessati.
